Interview with Metal.de, 2015

published May, 28th 2015

Hallo FALL OF CARTHAGE. Na, alles klar bei euch?

Sascha: Alles super!

Was macht euren Stil besonders?

Was hört ihr gerne?

Interview with metal.de, 2015 (english translation)

Hello FALL OF CARTHAGE. Well, everything alright with you?

Sascha: Everything is great! The waiting for the release drove us crazy in the last weeks and months. Now that criticism and praise are starting to come in, and we can finally talk openly with everyone about it, it's all much more lively.

Martin: All metal!

How do you feel when you already have such a smash hit with your debut album?

Sascha: We were already very happy with the result during the recording and mixing, but whether it will really be well received out there, we could not predict of course. The reactions so far are in any case confirming and very motivating.

Martin: Getting up in the morning with "grinning face" and "Morning Wood"... hahaha.

20 years of musical experience are in your bones. What can you tell our readers about your creative history so far?

Arkadius: Yes, each of us has quite a few years in the music business under our belts. But I have to tell you, despite 20 years of band experience and eleven released albums with SUIDAKRA, the songwriting and also the production of "Behold" felt like the first album for me. I'm glad that we haven't lost any passion and energy in all these years.

"Behold" is a coherent mix of different metal directions and sounds modern above all. How did you approach the album? You say that you don't care much about genre designations and just want to make good metal. Where does this attitude come from?

Sascha: When we met, Arkadius already had some ideas going. He sent me the demos and I started singing without thinking in a certain direction. Just as it came out of the mood - direct, honest and without barriers. We have a hard time with genre patterns. In principle, it doesn't matter what genre or type of music it is. The main thing is that it fits and pleases.

It's obvious that you are a perfect trio. How long have you known each other and what made you start FALL OF CARTHAGE?

Martin: Akki called me at some point because he wanted to know something about programming drums. He said it was about a project he had been planning for a while. So he sent me the material, I listened to it... BAM! I was immediately very enthusiastic about it and said: "Dude, I'll play you the stuff in the studio! Don't you dare think only about programming!". Already at the first impression of the songs I immediately thought of Sascha, because only his characteristic voice makes the whole thing authentic and round. The guy is simply the hammer!

Sascha: Martin and I know each other for about 20 years. We played together in friendly bands and some projects back then. At the beginning of 2014 he called me and asked if I would like to do a project with Arkadius from SUIDAKRA, with whom he has already recorded a few albums at Gernhart Studio. I said, "Sure, let's try that." And the project grew into the band.

Your band name is based on the destruction of Carthage by the Romans in the second century BC. How did you come up with this idea?

Sascha: Arkadius had already thought of the name when it started and somehow we thought it sounded bold. Not so cliché-like. For my personal interpretation of the name, the phoenix that appears in the logo and its symbolism for rising from the ashes is important. Symbolically, you could say, "No matter how destroyed everything seems. No matter how big the rubble under which one seems buried. There is always a way."

Arcadius: My idea here was that Carthage is representative of all the great empires that crumbled over time. However, something new always came up from it. This aspect and the symbolism of resurrection were decisive for the band name, as Sascha has already correctly interpreted it.

Just the great guitar melodies and the way in which drums, guitar and vocals harmonize with each other, make your music - in my eyes - from. How do you see that? What makes your style special?

Sascha: The variety within the songs, the experimental. Maybe also that we don't take ourselves too seriously and can laugh at ourselves.

Arkadius: For me it's the fact that we don't move in a certain musical category that makes the FOC sound special.

Martin: With FOC we can all just realize our experiences of the last 20 years and try everything we want at this moment. Just the integration of different sounds and style elements with an absolutely independent voice makes it hard to put us in a pigeonhole.

With a band like FALL OF CARTHAGE, it's reasonable to assume that the musicians will dare to experiment and continue to expand and deepen their style instead of getting stuck. What are your plans for future releases? Do you already have rough concepts, maybe even started working on them or are you not worried about that yet?

Sascha: We actually already have new material. Six demo songs are ready to be recorded. The studio time gave us such a push that we just kept being creative. Right now there is no overarching concept for our songs, (like SUIDAKRA for example). I think that could limit us too much. But we make sure that the FOC style comes through in all songs and that the overall impression is right in the end.

What are your plans for the future?

Sascha: More rehearsals and live gigs.

Arkadius: More albums and also more live gigs.

Martin: More beer and schnapps!!! Oh and new songs of course.

Always an interesting thing: The musical taste of musicians. What do you like to listen to? Which bands and artists have inspired you? Do you also find things apart from metal interesting?

Sascha: For me, bands like PANTERA, MACHINE HEAD or DOWNSET and REFUSED were especially formative. But I've also always liked to listen to rap. Depending on the mood, it's also sometimes soul, blues or classical music. I'm not so stuck in my ways.

Arkadius: Phew, there were really many for me. Apart from metal, I was inspired by THE POLICE, JIMI HENDRIX and THE DOORS. In my opinion they were ahead of their time and also broke out of the musical barriers of that time.

Martin: For me there is inspiration in almost every genre of music. The main thing is that it's "genuinely" made and grabs you by the ballz!

Thank you very much for the interview, FALL OF CARTHAGE. I wish you all the best for the future and hope that you can blow me away with upcoming works as much as you did with "Behold".

Sascha: Thank YOU for the good review and the interested questions! Look forward to our new shit!
